Technology

A RemoteDash GPS tracker is installed on your vehicle. The tracker is installed by either plugging it into the diagnostics port under the steering wheel or by wiring it to the vehicle's battery power. When it is wired it is typically installed underneath the dashboard.

The GPS tracker has a cell module in it that allows it to communicate over cellular networks such as T-mobile and AT&T, and a GPS chip in it that calculates GPS position. The data is sent over the cellular network to the RemoteDash servers or cloud where it is processed and displayed on the Internet. You will be given a login that provides exclusive access to your data on the RemoteDash cloud.

The RemoteDash cloud is located at www.cloud.remotedash.com. The data can be viewed with the use of a mobile phone, tablet, PC, or any other device that can run an Internet browser such as Chrome, Explorer, Firefox, etc.

No. RemoteDash has agreements with the cellular carriers so you don't have to worry about setting this up or working with a carrier.

No. The RemoteDash cloud works through an Internet browser so all you need is a connection to the Internet to see your data. A mobile phone application provides little to no utility for an application that runs on the cloud. The RemoteDash cloud software has been designed to run well on mobile phones, tablets, and PC's, and with all the popular browsers. This kind of architecture allows you to view and manage your units through any of these devices and not just a mobile phone.

It works wherever there are cellular networks. If there is no cellular network, data is stored until a cellular network comes into view.

The OBDII and wired devices do not normally contain batteries. They run off of the vehicle's battery. The Sports Tracker comes with its own battery for limited operations when vehicle power is removed. Some of the OBDII and wired devices come with a very small battery that can transmit just a few messages to let you know the tracker has been removed from battery power. Contact RemoteDash when ordering in order to obtain devices with this battery backup feature.

Not unless the vehicle sits idle for a very long time, about a year. The RemoteDash tracker has been designed to operate infrequently when the vehicle is off, thereby minimizing any affect on the vehicle battery. The tracker is always on when the vehicle is on.

Yes. All trackers send the latitude, longitude, speed, heading, altitude, battery voltage, acceleration, deceleration and time of transmission as well as the event that caused the transmission. The OBDII trackers connect to the vehicles computer and will also send the RPM, engine light status, fault codes, and VIN number. Some vehicle manufacturers do not provide the VIN via the OBDII.

OBDII stands for On-Board Diagnostics 2. It is a computer communication system within your vehicle that is used to help run and maintain your vehicle. Mechanics will often connect to the OBDII to check emissions,vehicle performance, and engine fault codes. The OBDII connector is normally located on the driver's side of the vehicle below the dashboard. Almost all cars and small trucks will have an OBDII if manufactured after 1995.

Yes. There are a couple different ways. If you purchase a wired tracker, these are normally hidden under the dashboard. You would not be able to find it unless you knew exactly what you were looking for, and even then it might take you awhile. If you purchase an OBDII tracker, these will generally be visible under the dashboard on the driver's side of the vehicle. The OBDII connector in the vehicle is normally clipped into a mount. It is normally easy to unclip the connector from its mount, and then stash the connector in a hidden location under the dashboard.

Yes. There are many different alerts such as boundary entry or exit and speeding that can be directed to your mobile phone so that you get immediate notification of an issue.

Yes. You can set up boundaries around a location so that you know when the vehicle enters or leaves the location. These are called geofences.

Yes. RemoteDash saves all your vehicle mileage data on a daily basis. This data can be easily downloaded to a spreadsheet from the RemoteDash cloud for tax mileage documentation or other purposes.

Yes. The RemoteDash system is designed to document your mileage for tax purposes and allows you to download the data to your own computing systems.

The tracker is programmed to transmit at least once a minute when moving but will transmit more frequently if turns occur or events such as speeding or excessive braking occur. When the ignition is off, the tracker transmits only a few times a day to minimize battery drain.

The OBDII trackers can, the others cannot. The OBDII tracker connects to the vehicles computer system and can read engine light status and fault codes among other things.

Yes. The RemoteDash system has an application for tracking your vehicle in real-time. The real-time application is limited only by how often the tracker transmits, which is at least once a minute in moving vehicles.

Yes. We use an algorithm that is similar to what insurance companies use and factors in speeding events and harsh braking and accelerations. The grade is posted once a day in a daily report.

We store all the messages from the tracker for at least two years. We will store the daily summary of the data for the lifetime of the tracker.

Sure. Just contact RemoteDash requesting us to delete your data and we will remove it.

The tracker data is designed only to be viewed by you or your company's employees. We allow up to 5 user accounts for each customer. So, if you want someone else to have access to your data, you can set up a separate user account for them. We also issue optional daily and weekly reports via email. These reports are accessed by an encrypted key contained in the email. You can forward these emails to others, and they can gain access to just that week's or day's data.

We use both 2G and 3G. All units shipped outside of San Diego are now 3G. 4G is only required for multimedia applications so we do not utilize this more expensive technology. Our carriers have indicated that they will continue to support 2G services through 2019, and 3G units have no defined time limit. If 2G coverage is eliminated in your area, and you have a 2G unit, we will replace the 2G unit free of charge.

Yes. Our carrier agreements allow operation in Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, and the continental United States. Operations will always be dependent upon an available cell network in the area.

Yes. The Sports Tracker unit is waterproof and designed for harsh environments. It works well on any outdoor 12 or 24 Volt vehicle including motorcycles and ATVs.

The Sports Tracker contains a motion sensor and backup battery. It will send a message when it detects movement or is removed from power. The standard OBDII and wired units cannot detect disconnection. If you need this capability, contact RemoteDash and ask for OBDII or wired trackers with backup batteries. They are slightly more expensive.

Yes. This is very easy to do if you have an OBDII tracker which can be easily moved from one vehicle to another. The tracker will show up as only one device on the RemoteDash cloud.

Cloud

Our new RemoteDash cloud allows many different ways to view your data. If you want to see the current day's track of the vehicle, you can do this through the Dashboard. You can access the Dashboard by clicking on 'Dashboard' in the top menu and then selecting the vehicle, clicking the vehicle map icon from the map on the Home page, or clicking the dashboard icon for the vehicle from the Home page.

This is done from the Home page. The Home page shows your vehicle locations and current status. By hovering over a vehicle name in the sidebar (the sidebar is only necessary and available for customers with multiple vehicles), the map will zoom to that vehicle and provide details of the current status. Clicking on the map icon inside the map will send you to the Dashboard for that vehicle.

The Dashboard is designed to view vehicle data one vehicle at a time and is the best place to view recent data from a vehicle. It contains the daily track of the vehicle, the most recent message status from the vehicle, indication of whether an alarm has occurred that day with a link for details on the alarm, track playback controls with gauges for speed, RPM, altitude, and acceleration, access to all the messages for that day from the vehicle, and access to the real-time application. Further, there are quick controls to view the previous and subsequent daily tracks.

There are lots of ways. If you are interested in only recent days, the best place is the Dashboard. If you are interested in daily summaries or data from more than a week or so back, the History page is the best place. The History page defaults to providing a summary of the last 30 days of data, with links to the Dashboard for each of the individual days. You can select any date range you want to see from the History page as well.

Alarms are generated for speeding, entries or exits from boundaries or geofences, large deceleration or braking events, large acceleration events, and a change in engine light status (OBDII only).

You do this from the Devices/Alerts page under the Settings menu. You can also do it from the Alerts Wizard under the Settings menu. The Alerts Wizard is helpful if you have not set any alerts yet and have multiple trackers.

An alarm is generated by the tracker and/or the RemoteDash cloud. It stays within the cloud, and all alarms can be viewed through the web. An alert is an immediate notification of an alarm or event that comes to you via either an email or a text. The alerts are configured on the Device/Alerts page under the Settings menu.

The Home page and the Dashboard will show an alarm icon if an alarm has occurred within the last 24 hours. You can also know it occurred by configuring a text or email alert when the alarm occurs.

The daily report contains the track for the day along with playback controls and gauges, the maximum acceleration, deceleration, and speed, the day's mileage, the day's driving grade, and any alarms for the day mapped to their location. The daily report also contains an entry form to add notes and indicate which tax categories the mileage pertains, whether business, medical, charity, etc. The weekly reports contain similar data but over a weeks time. The weekly report is sent around mid-day on Sunday for the previous week. The current and historic daily and weekly reports are available at the RemoteDash cloud as well. The reports are sent to the user's email address if enabled. The reports are enabled/disabled on the Users page under the Settings menu.

Yes. There are a number of ways to do this. You can enter the notes in the daily report, or through the History page, or through the Taxes page.

We believe the easiest way is to enter the data through the daily report. Each daily reports allow you to allocate your tax miles by category. The data can also be entered by enabling Ignition Off alerts and responding to the alert with whether the miles driven on the trip before the Ignition Off were taxable. Ignition off alerts are enabled on the Device/Alerts page under the Settings menu.

From the Dashboard, select the vehicle you want to monitor. Under the Tools menu, select "Turn-on real time". Real-time can be turned off in a similar manner or will automatically turn off when you leave the Dashboard.

Yes. You can add more users to your account through the Users page under Settings. Each account can have up to 5 users.

An admin account is the default account given to a new subscriber or customer. With an admin account, you can add other users, configure devices and alerts, or set geofences. A user account user can see all the same data as the admin account user but has no user or configuration access.

From the History page. There is a button at the top of the History table entitled "Year to Date Statistics". Click this button and it will take you to the annual statistics. The annual statistics are available for each year of tracker operations.

Yes. Enter the Dashboard and then select Tools->Show Messages. All the messages for that day will then be shown. If you want to view messages from other days, just go to a different day on the Dashboard. This can be done by clicking on the forward and back arrows next to the date, or by going to the History page and selecting the date from the History table.

Login to the RemoteDash cloud and then select Settings->Devices/Alerts. Under the Asset Name column simply type in the new name. Make sure to save the changes before leaving the page.

Yes. From the Home page, select Tools->Turn-on Refresh. This feature will refresh the map every 30 seconds. The map data will be refreshed, but the summary table and the sidebar list with status icons does not refresh. This feature is useful for projecting the RemoteDash map on a wall or screen, and constantly seeing your vehicle and/or fleet vehicle information in near real-time. To turn off this feature, go to Tools->Turn-off Refresh or navigate off the page.

The Fleet Report is accessed from the top menu by selecting Reports->Fleet Report. It contains by default a summary of yesterday's operations for every vehicle in your fleet including charts showing total vehicle miles versus the day and the vehicle. There is also a summary of the entire fleets mileage and alarms and a table with an operational summary for each vehicle. The date range can be changed to any range you desire from controls at the top of the page. The Fleet Report is only necessary and available for customers with more than one tracker.

Installation

Yes. The OBDII tracker is a plug-in device. It can be installed in seconds. The wired and Sports Tracker have a 3-wire harness: Ignition, Power, and Ground. Instructions are provided in the shipping package on how to install the tracker.

The wired and Sports Tracker have a 3-wire harness: Ignition, Power, and Ground. It is a simple installation requiring connection to the vehicle wiring. The tracker is normally installed under the dashboard, but can be installed in any enclosed area free of moisture. The Sports Tracker can be installed outdoors. Metal cannot between the tracker and the sky, or there will be poor or no GPS performance. Instructions on how to install the trackers are included in the shipping package.

Yes. Almost any car stereo dealer can install the tracker. You can try your local Best Buy as well. Bring the installation instructions in the shipping package to your installer.

We recommend you use a zip tie around the tracker and the OBDII connector to keep the tracker permanently installed.

In almost all cases yes. The OBDII connector is normally clipped or screwed into the dashboard. It can be detached from the dashboard easily and then secured in a concealed location under the dash with a zip tie or other attachment method. You many want to move the OBDII connector if it is easily kicked by your foot or you want a concealed installation.

We sell 3 models: OBDII, Wired, Sports Tracker. The OBDII device plugs into any vehicle with an OBDII communications system which is most vehicles and small trucks manufactured since 1995. The wired unit is similar to the OBDII but instead of plug-in connection it comes with a 3-wire harness that connects to vehicle ignition, power, and ground. The wired model is normally selected for vehicular applications where there is not an OBDII or where the tracker needs to be concealed. It depends on the type of vehicle and your requirements. If the vehicle does not contain an OBDII system, then you will need a wired or Sports Tracker unit. If it does contain an OBDII, then the OBDII is normally selected because of the simple, plug-in installation. The wired tracker is sometimes utilized on OBDII vehicles because it can be concealed. The Sports Tracker is always required when the installation will be outdoors or subject to moisture.

Troubleshooting

The first GPS fix when power is first applied to the unit may take a very long time resulting in a significant delay in the first message, perhaps up to 10 minutes. So it is not uncommon to see this delay, especially with trackers that don't have a good view of the sky. If you have plugged in the tracker and it has a clear view to the sky and still have not received a message for 10 minutes, we recommend you start the vehicle and leave the ignition on for about 5 minutes. If there is still no message, there is likely a problem of some kind. Check the LED's on the device if possible. You should see 2 or 3 of them. The green one should be blinking and the blue one should be on and may or may not be blinking. Note the status of the lights and contact RemoteDash for help.

As you may be familiar with your own experiences with cell phones, the network may drop a call or not be able to connect in some areas or at some times. If the vehicle is moving and you are not receiving any messages this is the likely reason. Messages are also delayed after the vehicle exits an underground parking lot or some garages. The delay is caused because the tracker cannot get a valid GPS fix in these situations. Once the vehicle leaves the garage, within 5 minutes you should be receiving messages normally.

The ignition wire is likely not connected properly. Turn the ignition on, leave the vehicle on for about 30 seconds, and then turn the ignition off. Go to the RemoteDash cloud Dashboard, and select Tools->Show messages. If there are no ignition on or off messages, then there is likely a bad connection with the ignition wire (white wire). Have the installer double-check this wire and retest. If there are still no ignition on or off messages, contact RemoteDash.

The best option is to remove the OBDII connector from the dashboard. It should be either wired or clipped in. Once it is removed, reconnect the tracker and reposition the connector in a secure location under the dash. You may need a zip tie or similar to keep the tracker in place. If removing the OBDII connector is not an acceptable solution, then you will need a wired tracker. Return the OBDII tracker to RemoteDash and we will replace it for free with the wired tracker.

If your tracker is no longer operating, remove power by either unplugging it from the OBDII, unplugging it from the harness (wired unit), or removing power from the harness (wired unit and Sports Tracker). Make sure the LEDs are no longer blinking or on. Reattach the unit or reapply power. If it is still not reporting, contact RemoteDash.

There are two typical reasons: the tracker is either not configured for alerts or configured improperly, or the mobile phone is sending the texts to spam. Go to the RemoteDash cloud and select Setting->Devices/Alerts. Check that the tracker is configured to receive an alert at the address associated with your mobile phone. If the configuration looks correct, check that your mobile phone is not sending the text to spam or the text is otherwise being filtered from view. If you still are not receiving text alerts, contact RemoteDash.
